Lights, Camera, and Mack the Knife

If I told you that I recently saw a film where the main character was famous for his rendition of Mack the Knife, would you think of Bobby Darin? Actually, the film that I saw was a documentary about German actor/director Kurt Gerron. Gerron was Germany's most famous actor before World War II. As a Jew, he was forced into the Theresienstadt concentration camp. Later, the Nazis picked Gerron to direct a propaganda film depicting the camp as a "great utopian experiment." The film was intended to fool the International Red Cross and neutral countries.

This film within a film was nominated for an Academy Award for 2002. Prisoner of Paradise plays today through Thursday at the Parkway Theater in South Minneapolis.
