When I was a teenager, our family toured DC a coupla times on the classic "learn about your country" trips. They were great.

We'd linger around the hangouts of the senators and reps, and visit the offices of our own.

One tidbit I remember from one of those trips: lawmakers had an acronym for Cindy Sheehans...

...like emergency room workers. They call some people GOMFERs, as in "Get Outta My F***ing Emergency Room"...patients who don't don't belong in the ER and are using it improperly.

Anyway, the senators and reps had an acronym for the worst type of vistor they try to avoid the most: wives and mothers of soldiers killed in action, or who died in mysterious or covert circumstances, or whose corpses could not be found (usually because they were on covert operations).

The lawmakers weren't cold-hearted, mind you: they had great sympathy for the deaths of the soldiers. But the surviving family members were always so relentless, dogged and single-minded that they were impossible to reason with or please. So the reps all worked together, using this secret acronym as one tool, to dodge them, recognizing that this perserverence was really a symptom of unresolved grief.

Anyway, my heart out to you, Cindy Sheehan. I know it really hurts. And I know you're slip-sliding down a slippery path with the help of many others that will simply take you further and further away from accepting your son's death and getting on with your life.
